Restoring smooth sailing on the Royal van Lent build Feadship M.Y. MP5

We are pleased to share the story of one of our recent service projects to a prestigious 1989 Feadship in Barcelona, Spain. This project is a great example to highlight our long term commitment to supporting our existing fleet of clients.

In October 2022, our team began inspecting the propeller shaft system of the Feadship build number 763, this system was originally delivered by Akerboom in 1989. The project aimed to address significant issues discovered after the vessel underwent an extensive drivetrain refit, which was done without involvement of Akerboom.

After reporting problems with the starboard thrust bearing, our local Akerboom employee in Barcelona boarded the vessel together with our propeller shaft engineer to inspect the issue. Upon examining debris in the thrust bearing pump and conducting an internal camera inspection, substantial damage was found. This necessitated not only an overhaul of the thrust bearing but also further investigation of the system to find the root cause.

A second trip to Barcelona was planned, during which our propeller shaft technicians, including one who had been servicing this yacht for over 15 years, opened the thrust bearings and unfortunately more damage was found that previously had not been visible. This prompted a comprehensive examination of not just the propeller shaft system but the entire drivetrain.

We collaborated with several partners, including Feadship Refit and MB92 Barcelona, to conduct a thorough study of the complete drivetrain. Akerboom dismantled the entire propeller shaft system, meticulously measuring and documenting all parts. After extensive engineering calculations, the final phase involved reinstalling the propeller shafts, replacing stern tubes, and installing various new or overhauled upgraded components.

Once the entire system was reassembled, it was time for sea trials. The drivetrain was closely monitored, with EMHA overseeing system vibrations, Caterpillar checking the main engines, and Akerboom monitoring the temperatures and oil flow of the propeller shafts.

Following the successful completion of the project at the beginning of summer of 2023, the yacht was ready for the owner and guests to enjoy once again.

More than a year later, Akerboom management made a courtesy visit when the yacht was again at MB92 in Barcelona. The captain reflects positively on the project outcome, noting that the yacht’s drivetrain still operates smoothly. This underscores Akerboom’s mission to deliver top-quality service and maintain enduring client relationships.
